the output from a solar cell increases with the increase in the intensity of light falling on it
a solar cell will produce power when any light is incident on it (an incandescent bulb , a CFT , a candle, an led ) but the output power will be less
as sunlight is the most powerful and abundant light source available we use it

when direct sunlight is incident on a solar cell it can provide more current so more current will be taken by battery to charge and so it will charge quickly
when light is less ( no direct sunlight ) the battery will charge if the voltage produced by the cell is sufficient but the cell will provide less current hence the battery charge very slowly

for best result the solar cell must be placed normal to the incident light
