Insolation Solar Radiation

Insolation Solar Radiation

Usage of Solar Power in Different Countries

Solar power has been increasingly used in various countries across the world. All the countries are keeping in mind that the already available resources will deplete if they keep using the wastefully and not wisely. Therefore focus is on those sources of energy that are available naturally and are renewable as well.

The grid-connected solar photovoltaics already had an installed capacity of nearly around 21,000 MW at the end of the year 2009 which is a contrast to 600 MW of concentrating solar thermal and 149,000 MW of Solar heating. Germany and Japan have been the two leading countries in terms of cumulative photovoltaic capacity along with China being the number one in solar heating. In recent years, many countries particularly in Western Europe have started enacting financial incentives in order to encourage the production of solar power. This shows the countries all over the world are very much concerned about saving energy by using not only solar power but also other naturally produced energy sources.

Germany is at the top most position all over the world in installing photovoltaics with a solar photovoltaic capacity of 8,877 megawatts (MW) in 2009 and that of 6,200 GWh of electricity that was being generated in 2009. Solar power now meets about 1.1 percent of Germany's demand of electricity. It is a share that some market analysts would expect to reach up to 25 percent by 2050.

Since India is densely populated as well as has a high Solar Insolation therefore, it is ideal for combination of solar power. Some large projects have also been proposed in India like the project of producing solar energy in the Thar Desert which can sufficiently generate 700 to 2,100 gigawatts. A plan will be executed in 2020 according to which it will become mandatory for all the government buildings including those of hospitals and hotels to keep the solar power production equipment in their premises and make a regular use of it.

The average solar radiation of the entire country of Iran is even higher than the central part of the country because of which it is making conscious efforts to as much usage of the natural resource available as possible. They have been taking steps to increase the capacity of their power plants which has sown good results as well. The power plant which is installed in Doorbid works independent of the grid system in comparison to the one installed at Hosseinian and Moalleman which are connected to the grid system. The best factor that is worth mentioning is that all the equipment of these sites is made in Iran only. Iran has taken many other steps for the wider use of solar power like the residential solar water heaters being introduced and along with 294 public baths heated with solar thermal energy.

Israel has also shown conscious efforts like it put solar water heating systems in almost all the residential buildings. It has asked the government to keep a check on their regular use by the people. It has advanced technologies competing with fossil fuels as well. Similarly, US have also been making all the possible efforts like other countries in the maximum usage of solar energy.

Techniques for Estimation of Solar Radiation

Techniques for Estimation of Solar Radiation

$101.96

In recent years, industrialization has been observed to be the main culprit globally, responsible for the pollution of the atmosphere. This has not only caused global warming, but also affected the transmissivity of the terrestrial region and thereby, severely affected the amount of solar radiation received by the earth. This work is an outcome of an attempt to study the different techniques/models for the estimation of global solar radiation on horizontal surface. The emphasis is on an understanding of the subject as well as on the different methods of calculation. The subject matter has been distributed in to five chapters. In Chapter 1, the introduction of the problem has been outlined. In Chapter 2, detailed formulations for the estimation of solar radiation by sunshine hour duration models have been presented. In Chapter 3, the temperature parameter is taken under consideration for the estimation of solar radiation. In Chapter 4, estimation includes all the other models which include climatic parameters such as latitude, altitude, transmissivity, albedo, humidity etc. In Chapter 5, possible areas of future work have been discussed. Responses of Plant to UVB Radiation

Responses of Plant to UVB Radiation

$380.76

The research in this book covers papers on a great number of research projects on the responses of plants and crops of natural terrestrial ecosystems, of agroecosystems, and of aquatic ecosystems, to enhanced solar UVB as a result of stratospheric ozone depletion. Some introductory chapters deal with general aspects of how plants respond to UVB radiation. Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is a primary energy resource for terrestrial plants, necessary for plant growth. Inevitably terrestrial plants absorb UVB when exposed to solar radiation. The spectral balance between PAR and UVB is discussed in several chapters. The responses of plants and ecosystems from the Antarctic and Arctic to enhanced solar UVB radiation as a consequence of the hole in the ozone layer are considered in some detail. In addition the papers in the book discuss the problem of how responses of plants to UVB radiation interact with other environmental factors. The book is of great importance for those who are involved in global change topics: biologists, ecologists, earth scientists, agronomists, environmental scientists, and those who develop environmental policy. Solar Furnace

Solar Furnace

$87.62

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A solar furnace is a structure used to harness the rays of the sun in order to produce high temperatures, usually for industry. This is achieved using a curved mirror (or an array of mirrors) that acts as a parabolic reflector, concentrating light (Insolation) onto a focal point. The temperature at the focal point may reach 3,500 C (6,330 F), and this heat can be used to generate electricity, melt steel, make hydrogen fuel or nanomaterials. $70.1

A solar tower is a structure used to support equipment for studying the sun, and is typically part of solar telescope designs. Solar towers are used to raise the observation equipment above the atmospheric disturbances caused by solar heating of the ground and the radiation of the heat into the atmosphere. Traditional observatories do not have to be placed high above ground level as they do most of their observation at night when ground radiation is at a minimum. The horizontal Snow solar observatory was built on Mount Wilson in 1904. It was soon found that heat radiation was disrupting observations. Almost as soon as the Snow Observatory opened, plans were started for a 60 foot tall tower that opened in 1908 followed by a 150 foot tower in 1912. The 60 foot tower is currently used to study helioseismology while the 150 foot tower is active in UCLAs Solar Cycle Program. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Ultraviolet(uv) Radiation Measurement in Africa

Ultraviolet(uv) Radiation Measurement in Africa

$124.27

Surface solar ultraviolet radiation measurement is uneasy task due to the characteristics of the determining factors like aerosol, stratospheric and tropospheric ozone and precipitation. We found this study important for travelers, tourists, industries, infrastructure builders, farmers, health practitioners and radiation researchers for ultraviolet radiation in excess affects health (causes skin cancer and eye disease called cataract), infrastructure, yield of crops, and service time of industrial products. In this research, different models have been devised that have considered the effects of those factors in the continent of Africa. Based on our models, ozone has the highest contribution for the increase or decrease of surface UV, clouds have moderate contribution and aerosols have the least contribution. The amount of skin burning UV (erythermal UV) in Africa is high. According to the world standard the possible ranges of erythermal UV is from 4 to 9 in UV index (UVI) (Moderate to High). 100,000Year Problem

100,000Year Problem

$62.13

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The 100,000 year problem is a discrepancy between past temperatures and the amount of incoming solar radiation, or insolation. The former rises and falls according to the strength of radiation from the sun, the distance from the earth to the sun, and the tilt of the Earths poles. However, the iceage cycle, which grows and shrinks periodically on a 100,000 year (100 ka) timescale, does not correlate well with any of these factors. Due to variations in the Earths orbit, the amount of insolation varies with periods of around 21,000, 40,000, 100,000, and 400,000 years. Variations in the amount of solar heating drive changes in the climate of the Earth, and are recognised as a key factor in the timing of initiation and termination of ice ages. Spectral analysis shows that the most powerful climate response is at 100,000 year period, but the orbital forcing at this period is small. Solar Power in the United Kingdom

Solar Power in the United Kingdom

$76.47

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Until July 2008, solar power in the United Kingdom (photovoltaic electricity generation) was relatively commercially unattractive due to the moderate level of insolation, cheap grid electricity (compared to other European countries), and low financial incentives from government. In particular, net metering was not readily available, due to disagreement on what to do with the VAT. In 2006, the United Kingdom had installed 12.5 MWp of photovoltaic capacity represented just 0.3 of the European total of 3.4GWp. By way of comparison, due to their plans to phase out nuclear power there is a growing capacity in Germany (due to a Feedin Tariff program), where 3.0 GWp had been installed by the end of 2006 (90 of all European capacity). In contrast, solar thermal capacity to supply hot water was expected to grow to 25 MWth in 2006. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Polarimetric Studies of the Solar Atmosphere

Polarimetric Studies of the Solar Atmosphere

$125.85

This book describes the design and development of an instrument called the Solar Vector Magnetograph or SVM. This instrument maps the magnetic field of the solar active regions. The magnetic field of solar active regions is responsible for the eruptive phenomena on the sun which expel large amounts of highenergy particles and radiation in the interplanetary space posing danger for human activities in space. The careful measurement of solar magnetic field is very important to track its evolution which may be useful for forecasting the solar eruptive events. The instrument SVM was developed by Dr. Sanjay Gosain during his Ph.D. at Udaipur Solar Observatory, India for which he received best thesis award by Astronomical Society of India. This book describes how the highcadence magnetic field measurements can be done by using a tunable FabryPerot etalon and a polarimeter. This book is useful for any solar astronomer who wishes to develop an instrument for measuring solar magnetic fields or wishes to understand how solar magnetic field is measured using Zeemaneffect diagnostics. The techniques of optical polarimetry is also discussed in depth. Solar Water Heating in Dragash Municipality, Kosovo

$106.74

Water has been heated with the sun almost as long as there have been humans, but it is not until recently that more advanced and effective solar water heating systems have become common, and they are still gaining ground. Through the years new systems and new solar collectors have been developed. In Kosovo, however, not much attention has been paid to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and solar water heating systems is a new concept. However, a solar water heating system has been installed at the hospital in Dragash Municipality in southern Kosovo. The system is a pilot project, to see how well solar energy can be used in this area. This thesis examines the existing solar water heating system at the hospital in Dragash. The possibilities of using the fundamental principle of the solar water heating system at the hospital on residential houses in Dragash is looked into. The total annual incoming solar radiation for one square meter is calculated. The environmental, social and economic effects of solar water heating in Dragash is considered and discussed. Economic calculations are made on the effects of installation of solar water heating systems. Author: Dahl H. Excess exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the only readibly modifiable skin cancer risk factor. To assist with the design and evaluation of child sun protection interventions in schools and the community at large, this first comprehensive study used electronic monitors to record time stamped, secondbysecond UVR exposure of 325 New Zealand primary schoolchildren who kept a diary of their activities and sunprotective practices. They also completed a sunrelated knowledge, attitudes and usual behaviours questionnaire. School principals and Health promoters were interviewed about school and community sun protection efforts. Passive activities were associated with the highest UVR exposure rates compared to active, travel and unclassified pursuits. Girls tended to have higher sun protection scores than boys, but were more likely to sunbathe and use sunscreen. When considering sunrelated knowledge, attitudes and behaviours simultaneously, knowledge was only significantly associated with behaviours when mediated by attitudes. These findings will be developed into child sun protection messages. Effects of Solar Particle Events on Geospace

Effects of Solar Particle Events on Geospace

$172.06

The Earth receives all of its external energy input from the Sun (neglecting galactic sources). This consists of both particles of various energies and electromagnetic radiation of various wavelengths. The particles emitted from the Sun become part of the solar wind, from which the interplanetary magnetic eld originates. These particles transport magnetic, thermal, and kinetic energy from the Sun to the Earth. The solar wind has two modes: slow (typical speed 400 km/s), and fast (typical speed 800 km/s). Particles of various energies are released and accelerated into the heliosphere during (i) sporadic events involving both ares and coronal mass ejections, and (ii) recurrent events driven by corotating interaction regions associated with fast solar wind streams from transequatorial coronal holes. A small proportion of these particles, of which protons are by far the most signi cant for our purposes, deposit their magnetic and kinetic energy within geospace (de ned herein as that which is within the magnetopause). This thesis investigates the effects of these sporadic and recurrent events on geospace.
