       Today with more and more warning from Scientists and news about environmental degradation and rising temperature all over, we are hearing more about alternate and ecofreindly technologies for electricity production.  Among them Solar energy seems to be the most popular one , it is so easy that one can produce his own electrical requirement in his own home, because of the easiness of production as well as the manifold application it has become very popular amidst general population.

       Now you might wonder what this solar energy is! It is nothing but sunlight converted into electricity by means of a Solar cell, which is nothing but a photovoltaic cell. As light comes down and hits the glass cell of the solar panel, its atoms are shaken so that the electrons break free.  As these electrons flow through the cell, they create usable but natural electricity.

       Now, you will like to ask, of what benefit is this to me? At a macro level, it will reduce the requirement of fossil fuels, which is a major pollutant of the environment by emitting "Greenhouse gases". In addition, this will certainly help to reduce the environmental degradation and thereby helps to save our planet from total destruction. At micro level, Solar panels can be used in many ways. In Chennai, one company has manufactured various products like solar cap, solar cell phone charger, etc. The solar cap is a cap containing a tiny fan driven by a solar cell, once the user wears it and comes out of his house the fan starts to work and gives a cool breeze.  The cell phone charger is again a small portable charger made up of a small solar panel which can be carried anywhere and put it in sunlight and your cell phone is charged.  Certainly very good ideas for a country like India with a lot of sunshine.

       Now you are interested in knowing the economic consequences of using solar energy a large scale.  Because you can produce it in your own home, there is no question of paying electricity bills, a great saving of money.  Excess energy if you can sell to your neighbor, a possible side income and no question of power cut. Governments will certainly provide tax cut to people who are “solarising their homes".

       Apart from these major applications will be solar power driven automobiles and two wheelers.  Already major automobile manufacturers as if General Motors (I am not sure) have designed and developed automobiles using solar power.  This will again help us to preserve the environment, as automobile exhaust is a major pollutant of the environment.

       Many spacecrafts are also carrying solar panels for their power requirement.  An example of this is International space station, which is fitted with solar panels. 

       In Andhra Pradesh capital, Hyderabad, one petrol bunk (gas station) is completely powered by solar energy.  We must salute the owner of that petrol bunk. Today it is rarity, but soon it will be a normal one. 

       Houses fitted with solar panels will fetch a higher price, as people buying houses will like to see it fully assembled with solar energy system.

       People with social consciousness must start persuading governments to provide with low interest rate loans to fit their house with solar energy systems and tax incentives.  It will be nothing wrong if governments across the world enact a law asking all commercial centers and hotels, etc to go in for solar energy systems for their power requirement. 

        Learning about how to utilize solar energy in your house is not a tough job.  There are many downloadable e-books available and they can be bought online.  Many paper print books are also available which you can buy online bookstores.
