The Solar Project $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In 1995 Solar One was converted into Solar Two, by adding a second ring of 108 larger 95 m (1,000 ft ) heliostats around the existing Solar One, totaling 1926 heliostats with a total area of 82,750 m (891,000 ft ). This gave Solar Two the ability to produce 10 megawatts. Solar Two used molten salt, a combination of 60 sodium nitrate and 40 potassium nitrate, as an energy storage medium instead of oil or water as with Solar One. This helped in energy storage during brief interruptions in sunlight due to clouds. The molten salt also allowed the energy to be stored in large tanks for future use such as night time.Solar Two proved it could run continuously around the clock producing power. Solar Two was decommissioned in 1999, and was converted by the University of California, Davis, into an Air Cherenkov Telescope in 2001, measuring gamma rays hitting the atmosphere. Solar Tower $70.1 A solar tower is a structure used to support equipment for studying the sun, and is typically part of solar telescope designs. Solar towers are used to raise the observation equipment above the atmospheric disturbances caused by solar heating of the ground and the radiation of the heat into the atmosphere. Traditional observatories do not have to be placed high above ground level as they do most of their observation at night when ground radiation is at a minimum.The horizontal Snow solar observatory was built on Mount Wilson in 1904. It was soon found that heat radiation was disrupting observations. Almost as soon as the Snow Observatory opened, plans were started for a 60 foot tall tower that opened in 1908 followed by a 150 foot tower in 1912. Solar City $180.02 This book is based on a master thesis project developed by Helle Hejler Andersen Mathias Lind Klogborg at the Master program in Architecture at Architecture Design, Aalborg University, Denmark. The project focuses on designing an energy neutral building in a Danish context integrating dwellings, public outdoor spaces and other functions. The building industry emits more than 40 of the Danish energy consumption, and for that reason it is a focal point to act on. As architects we play an important role in reducing costs and CO2 emission while at the same time designing better homes and indoor environments for people to live in. In order to meet these issues and to achieve energy neutrality the focus has been on integrating renewable energy sources without compromising the architectural quality. To solve this task the Integrated Design Process (IDP) has been used as a tool during the entire project to reach an integrated design. The project is based on the Bolig+ program. In 2006, the United Kingdom had installed 12.5 MWp of photovoltaic capacity represented just 0.3 of the European total of 3.4GWp. By way of comparison, due to their plans to phase out nuclear power there is a growing capacity in Germany (due to a Feedin Tariff program), where 3.0 GWp had been installed by the end of 2006 (90 of all European capacity).
