A Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioning System $129.05 In tropical, hot and humid climates where temperature and humidity level are high, air conditioning (AC) systems are necessary for providing thermal comfort to building occupants. For an air conditioned space that needs outside air ventilation to maintain indoor air quality, the ventilation air can bring sensible heat ratio (SHR) of cooling load well below 0.7 since it accounts for as high as 80 of total latent load in the space. The cooling load SHR below this value cannot be handled effectively by conventional AC systems. Handling sensible and latent load separately using a hybrid scheme is an interesting option. A desiccant system can handle the latent load while a conventional system can handle mainly the sensible load. This could help reduce overall energy consumption and provide effective control of indoor air condition. This book presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the use of a liquid desiccant (LiCl) AC system in tropical Thailand. The system treated ventilation air before supplying it into a conditioned space. Solar energy was used for the regeneration process. A simulation procedure developed for evaluating the system performance is also presented. Desiccant $95.59 A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that induces or sustains a state of dryness (desiccation) in its local vicinity in a moderately wellsealed container. Commonly encountered prepackaged desiccants are solids, and work through absorption or adsorption of water, or a combination of the two. Desiccants for specialized purposes may be in forms other than solid, and may work through other principles, such as chemical bonding of water molecules. Prepackaged desiccant is most commonly used to remove excessive humidity that would normally degrade or even destroy products sensitive to moisture. Drierite,Silica gel, calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, montmorillonite clay, and molecular sieves are commonly used as desiccants. Rice is a common lowtech alternative frequently used, for example, in saltshakers to maintain granularity of tablesalt for effective pouring or shaking. Rice, however, is not a good general purpose desiccant since, unless immersed in an organismhostile environment like pure salt, over time may be eaten by creatures that might in turn contaminate the product that is being preserved. A Survey of Passive Solar Buildings $35.09 This publication of passive solar projects built in the United States has been prepared to document the state of the art in passive solar design. Passive solar heating and cooling can provide a major percentage of the buildings energy requirement, while at the same time representing a heightened level of involvement for the architect in the design stages of the building. The full potential of this passive conditioning depends on a sensitive awareness of the relationship between climate, comfort, and the thermal characteristics of buildings and building materials. Passive solar systems are often misunderstood and vaguely defined. Many of the approaches to passive solar heating and cooling are at rudimentary stages, with little performance data and evaluation, few modeling techniques, and minimal published information. Yet for the building designer and the occupant, these concepts have major implications in the design and use of buildings. The purpose of this publication is to offer a working definition and a basic understanding of a number of existing applications of passive solar designs. Methods of passive solar design are not presented in this publication; nor are rules of thumb or passive solar assemblies and components. These subjects will be addressed in later publications. A reference bibliography has been included to assist the reader who desires more information and to stimulate additional individual research and testing.
