What happens to your energy / hot water if you use solar energy and the sky is cloudy for several days straight?

I used to have a solar water heater 15-20 years ago and it worked OK when it was sunny (of course!). However, if the weather was cloudy rainy / for several days straight, there was no hot water when it was needed most. Systems Modern work better, or is this still an issue?

Most solar water heaters are installed as a preheater to a water heater backup. The collectors heat water in a super-insulated storage tank. The output of hot water that goes to the water inlet a cold-heating, electricity, gas, oil, whatever. Thus, rainy days, the tank is insulated so as not lose much heat it makes, but it may send the water 90 degrees to your supplementary heating instead of 50 degrees you get from the city or property. It is 40 degrees less than the backup needs to heat, but still continues to provide hot water at home. But on sunny days, your supplementary heating needs no light at all. Many people actually turn the backup off in the summer.
