In the film "Knowing", how would a solar flare affect a plane and subway before destroying the entire earth?

I don't see how it can affect a plane and a subway first.
How is that?

It was not the flare that was causing the disasters. The numbers were counting down to a final massive disaster (aka the end of the world by way of a solar flare) and the dates along the way were predicting minor happenings such as the plane crash and subway accident.
