Random Graphs $89.22 The book is devoted to the study of classical combinatorial structures such as random graphs, permutations, and systems of random linear equations in finite fields. The author shows how the application of the generalized scheme of allocation in the study of random graphs and permutations reduces the combinatorial problems to classical problems of probability theory on the summation of independent random variables. He offers recent research by Russian mathematicians, including a discussion of equations containing an unknown permutation, and the first Englishlanguage presentation of techniques for solving systems of random linear equations in finite fields. These new results will interest specialists in combinatorics and probability theory and will also be useful to researchers in applied areas of probabilistic combinatorics such as communication theory, cryptology, and mathematical genetics. Embeddability in Graphs $301.11 This monograph provides a theoretical treatment of the problems related to the embeddability of graphs. Among these problems are the planarity and planar embeddings of a graph, the Gaussian crossing problem, the isomorphisms of polyhedra, surface embeddability, problems concerning graphic and cographic matroids and the knot problem from topology to combinatorics are discussed. Rectilinear embeddability, and the netembeddability of a graph, which appears from the VSLI circuit design and has been much improved by the author recently, is also illustrated. Furthermore, some optimization problems related to planar and rectilinear embeddings of graphs, including those of finding the shortest convex embedding with a boundary condition and the shortest triangulation for given points on the plane, the bend and the area minimizations of rectilinear embeddings, and several kinds of graph decompositions are specially described for conditions efficiently solvable. At the end of each chapter, the Notes Section sets out the progress of related problems, the background in theory and practice, and some historical remarks. Some open problems with suggestions for their solutions are mentioned for further research. Eigenspaces of Graphs $95.59 Graph theory is an important branch of contemporary combinatorial mathematics. By describing recent results in algebraic graph theory and demonstrating how linear algebra can be used to tackle graphtheoretical problems, the authors provide new techniques for specialists in graph theory. The book explains how the spectral theory of finite graphs can be strengthened by exploiting properties of the eigenspaces of adjacency matrices associated with a graph. The extension of spectral techniques proceeds at three levels: using eigenvectors associated with an arbitrary labeling of graph vertices, using geometrical invariants of eigenspaces such as graph angles and main angles, and introducing certain kinds of canonical eigenvectors by means of star partitions and star bases. Current research on these topics is part of a wider effort to forge closer links between algebra and combinatorics. Problems of graph reconstruction and identification are used to illustrate the importance of graph angles and star partitions in relation to graph structure. Specialists in graph theory will welcome this treatment of important new research. A Study of Unit BarVisibility Graphs. $115.71 Barvisibility graphs were introduced in the 1970s as a method to test printed circuit boards. Wismath and independently Tomassia and Tollis provided characterizations in the mid1980s. Unit barvisibility graphs are a type of barvisibility graph in which all bars have the same unit length. This length restriction was motivated by circuits in which all components have near the same length. This dissertation provides general results of unit barvisibility graphs and then focuses on unit barvisibility graphs having unit bar layouts with width less than two. Two characterizations of these graphs are provided. One characterization provides information on the unit bar layout of such a graph, and the other is tailored to finding a polynomial time algorithms to determine whether a graph has such a unit bar layout. Finally, Chapter 5 addresses induced subgraphs of grids, a challenging subclass of graphs that will guide the design of a general polynomial time algorithm for recognition of these graphs. Domination in Sparse Graphs. $115.71 We consider extremal problems in the area of domination of graphs. A set D of vertices is dominating in a graph G if every vertex of G is at distance at most one from D. An arbitrary set A of vertices in a graph G dominates itself and the vertices at distance one from it. The domination number, gamma(G), of a graph G is the minimum size of a dominating set in G. In 1996, Reed proved the sharp bound that the domination number of every nvertex graph G with minimum degree at least 3 is at most 3n/8. He also conjectured that gamma( H) 13+1 69 . The second sequence is Hk infinityk=1; these are 2connected cubic graphs with limkrarr;infinityg Hk VHk >= 13+1 78 . We then prove that for connected cubic graphs with at least 10 vertices, Reeds upper bound can be improved to 4n/11. Note that there exist several connected cubic graphs on 8 vertices with domination number 3. We next investigate the domination number of cubic graphs with large girth. We first prove that if G is a cubic connected nvertex graph of girth g, then gG 8, then gG=8/5 for every tree T with at least 2 vertices. Graphs and Homomorphisms $251.55 This is a book about graph homomorphisms. Graph theory is now an established discipline but the study of graph homomorphisms has only recently begun to gain wide acceptance and interest. The subject gives a useful perspective in areas such as graph reconstruction, products, fractional and circular colorings, and has applications in complexity theory, artificial intelligence, telecommunication, and, most recently, statistical physics. Based on the authors lecture notes for graduate courses, this book can be used as a textbook for a second course in graph theory at 4th year or masters level and has been used for courses at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver), Charles University (Prague), ETH (Zurich), and UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro). The exercises vary in difficulty. The first few are usually intended to give the reader an opportunity to practice the concepts introduced in the chapter; the later ones explore related concepts, or even introduce new ones. For the harder exercises hints and references are provided. The authors are well known for their research in this area and the book will be invaluable to graduate students and researchers alike. Flows in Graphs and Related Problems $172.06 Flows in graphs present a basis for solving many problems in modern mathematics, having applications in practice and significant theoretical impact in various areas on discrete mathematics, such as graph coloring, labeling, covering of graphs, matroid theory, combinatorial optimization, and statistical physics. In the book are considered several theoretical aspects of flows in graphs. The results are divided into three parts. In the first part, nowherezero group and integervalued flows are studied, together with related areas regarding snarks and graph colorings. The second part contains results about cycle double coverings of graphs, hamiltonian cycles and dominating cycles. The last part is devoted to flows in combinatorial optimization and some related areas from transversal theory and latin squares. The work was presented as DSc. Thesis in the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic. It can be useful for advanced students and researchers interested in combinatorics and graph theory. Graphs on Surfaces and Their Applications $269.24 Graphs drawn on twodimensional surfaces have always attracted researchers by their beauty and by the variety of difficult questions to which they give rise. The theory of such embedded graphs, which long seemed rather isolated, has witnessed the appearance of entirely unexpected new applications in recent decades, ranging from Galois theory to quantum gravity models, and has become a kind of a focus of a vast field of research. The book provides an accessible introduction to this new domain, including such topics as coverings of Riemann surfaces, the Galois group action on embedded graphs (Grothendiecks theory of dessins denfants ), the matrix integral method, moduli spaces of curves, the topology of meromorphic functions, and combinatorial aspects of Vassilievs knot invariants and, in an appendix by Don Zagier, the use of finite group representation theory. The presentation is concrete throughout, with numerous figures, examples (including computer calculations) and exercises, and should appeal to both graduate students and researchers. Bipartite Graphs and Their Applications $221.44 Bipartite graphs are perhaps the most basic of objects in graph theory, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Until now, they have been considered only as a special class in some wider context. This work deals solely with bipartite graphs, providing traditional material as well as many new and unusual results. The authors illustrate the theory with many applications, especially to problems in timetabling, chemistry, communication networks and computer science. The material is accessible to any reader with a graduate understanding of mathematics and will be of interest to specialists in combinatorics and graph theory.
