Cars are often cited as being damaging to the environment and a prime cause of climate change, and while cars are being manufactured to be more environmental friendly and we the motorist reduce the amount of travelling we do -  driving is still a necessity for many people.

However, there is much that a motorist can do to help reduce their emissions whilst driving their vehicle and at the same time benefit from more miles to the gallon, saving money, petrol and the environment.

Perhaps the most important aspect is to ensure the car is running well and is in good order. A car in need of a service will burn more fuel and cost your more money to run. Ensure spark plugs, air filters, oil and other components and fluids are changed regularly.

Always ensure they tyres are pumped up to recommended levels. Under inflated tyres will effect performance and efficiency by as much as 10 percent.

Next ensure you are not travelling around with unnecessary weight. A spare wheel and jack are essential but many items left in people's boots often aren't. Also make sure you are not carrying an empty roof rack or other external furniture like flags, these create drag and reduce efficiency.

When driving, drive as smoothly as possible. Avoid heavy braking as much as you can and keep your revs low, choose a high gear and don't speed.

Turn the air conditioner off. A/C on cars can drink petrol and reduce your miles to the gallon by a quarter. Also avoid charging items like laptops. Why not buy a solar powered laptop charger or other solar powered charger to recharge items on the go – use the sun, its free!

You can even buy a solar powered trickle charger for your car battery, ideal to ensure you always have enough power to get started.
