Guide To Choosing Window Shades

Every home needs some sort of window treatment. Whether you choose window shades, blinds, shutter or curtains you need something to block out the harsh UV rays from the sun.

While this used to be an easy task of choosing curtain fabric, you now have so many options that it can quickly become overwhelming. The best way to start picking through your choices is with a little information.

Types of Window Treatments
There are many types of window treatments and each has their own advantages. Before you choose your blinds, you first have to determine your purpose.

Solar Screens - A solar screen does not offer privacy. However, it does block out the harsh glare of the sun while preserving the view. These are great for kitchens, dining rooms, or any place where privacy is not an issue.

Real Wood Blinds - Wood blinds are lightweight and offer a good amount of privacy. They work well covering large and small windows alike. However, they do not work well with water. Keep them away from bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any other place where water and humidity may be an issue.

Faux Wood Blinds - Faux wood blinds are heavier than real wood. Therefore, they are harder to handle when covering larger windows like sliding glass doors. However, they hold up wonderfully in wet and high humidity areas. You can place them in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms without fear of cracking or warping. They are easy to clean and offer a good amount of privacy.

Window Shades - Generally, window shades are considered your fabric blinds. They can include roman shades, honeycomb shades, roller shades or any other type of blinds covered in fabric. They offer the most privacy. When you add a ComforTrack or an EnergyTrack, you get the ultimate in privacy and energy efficiency. However, fabrics can get stained. Therefore, you will want to keep them away from sinks, stoves and other messy places.

Child Safe Window Shades
In light of recent blinds recalls, it is important to mention child safety. When choosing a window treatment for houses with young children, it is highly recommended to choose cordless shades. In most cases, you can find a cordless version of any type of shade you want. If in doubt, ask your customer service representative about cordless equivalents to the window treatment of your choice.
