Board, Shareholder and Auditor Monitoring $154.53 This study investigates the effects of corporate monitoring mechanisms on firm performance and their substitution and complementary effects under different conditions of agency conflict. Following the muchreported collapses of publiclylisted companies such as Enron, World Com, HIH and One. Tel, corporate monitoring is an issue that has emerged at the forefront of the debate on corporate responsibility. The separation of ownership and control in publicly owned firms has the potential to create conflict between the interests of managers and shareholders. Such conflict can be reduced by devising effective monitoring mechanisms. There has been considerable prior research on corporate monitoring and firm performance. However, most studies have used single monitoring mechanisms to determine the effect of monitoring on firm performance. Attention has not been given to the combined effect of monitoring mechanisms and the possibility of these mechanisms having a substitution or complementary effect. This has implications for endogeneity and multicollinearity issues that are common concerns in corporate governance research. Solar Performance of Courtyard Buildings $154.53 This book examines the concept of the geometry of a courtyard space as an environmentally appropriate design parameter for climatic improvements in different climates. It studies the environmental potential of courtyard forms for microclimatic improvements, with the aim of providing outdoor living and of improving visual and thermal conditions in the surrounding buildings. The book focuses on solar control and studies the geometrical design variables, which directly or indirectly affect the environmental performance of courtyard buildings. The thermal performance of the courtyard form was investigated with the ultimate objective of incorporating systematically the thermal aspect with other aspects of design. A variety of courtyard geometries, in plan, were considered in the book taking the cities of Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Rome and Stockholm as empirical backgrounds representing the climatic regions of hot humid, hot dry, temperate and cold climates respectively. The book should be useful to architects, engineers and anyone else who is interested in courtyard building design, solar architecture and energy saving in buildings. Privatization and After: Monitoring and Regulation $318.63 Privatization and After discusses the need to monitor privatization. The authors argue that monitoring will show whether or not the process is fulfilling its objectives and contributing to improved economic performance. The book also assesses the need for, and techniques of, regulating privatized enterprises in situations of continuing monopoly or significant market control. This is supported by an indepth analysis of regulation in the UK and its implications for developing countries. Further illustrative material is drawn from a range of developed, developing and former socialist countries. Author: Ramanadham, V./ Ramanadham, V. V./ Ramanadham, V. V. Place Based Monitoring in Environmental Protection $187.99 Under the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act, compliance monitoring is the means through which water quality information is collected. Such data informs billion dollar decisions regarding infrastructure improvement and replacement. This research investigates placebased monitoring in the specific context of nineteen Iowa surface waterinfluenced public water systems (PWS). By screening historical water quality data and identifying significant historical contaminants and their occurrence patterns, a placebased monitoring approach (PBA) and eventbased temporal sampling strategies were developed and their performance compared to current SDWA requirements. Particularly when few contaminants are of concern in a given PWS, the PBA was found to be significantly more efficient and costeffective than current SDWA monitoring. Eventbased temporal sampling strategies outperformed unbiased temporal strategies in that fewer samples were necessary to accurately estimate worstcase scenario nitrate concentrations. Resources conserved by more cost effective monitoring could be devoted to other existing or emerging issues and contribute to more targeted water system and treatment designs. Vehicle Monitoring Using Vibration Characteristic $113.11 This work presents an approach to the condition monitoring in vehicle. A vibration test profiles is obtained in road testing of sedan size car. The first step is to define the performance parameters under study. The output depend variable are frequency, R.M.S, energy, and acceleration amplitude which have been considered for the measurement. Design parameter such as steering, brake pedal, seat and engine are defined as those related directly to operational testing on specific test vehicle and which summarize the input to the vehicle in the given speed conditions. The overall objective of the research study was to analysis the vibration signature due to the mechanical problem in order to reduce the rate of the vibration. All the performance and operational characteristics of leadingedge of vibration technological were approaches to monitoring the vehicle systems. Autonomous Environmental Monitoring $113.11 Although the interest in Wireless Sensor Network research is increasing, and new concepts and applications are being demonstrated, several fundamental issues remain unsolved. While many of these issues do not require to be solved for proofofconcept designs, they are important issues to be addressed when referring to the longterm operation of these systems. One of these issues is the systems lifetime, which relates to the lifetime of the nodes, upon which the system is composed. This book focuses on node lifetime extension based on energy management. While some constraints and results might hold true from a more general perspective, the main application target involves environmental measurement systems based on Wireless Sensor Networks. We show how precise task scheduling in these systems, due to node synchronization, combined with methods such as duty cycling and power domains, can optimize the overall energy use. Furthermore, we address power generation from ambient energy sources, with a focus on solar energy harvesting systems at locations with limited insolation. Designing a Driver Vigilance Monitoring Device $111.53 Portable medical devices processing images or executing complex artificial intelligence algorithms are posing a challenge for microprocessor manufacturers. Since these devices require a processing platform that is able to satisfy their application realtime requirements. Single processor platforms are unable to provide a satisfactory performance at a reasonable cost. In this book the alternative of using a multiprocessor platform is explored. A design methodology that utilizes the flexibility and short design cycle of FPGAs in order to achieve this target is proposed. The method allows optimizing the multiprocessor platform and the software code targeting each processing core to meet realtime constraints. The effectiveness of the design methodology is practically demonstrated by building a real life driver vigilance monitoring system based on visual cues extraction and evaluation. The application drives the whole design process to prove its efficiency. Moreover the book covers the practical steps of building the video processing algorithm. A Survey of Passive Solar Buildings $35.09 This publication of passive solar projects built in the United States has been prepared to document the state of the art in passive solar design. Passive solar heating and cooling can provide a major percentage of the buildings energy requirement, while at the same time representing a heightened level of involvement for the architect in the design stages of the building. The full potential of this passive conditioning depends on a sensitive awareness of the relationship between climate, comfort, and the thermal characteristics of buildings and building materials. Passive solar systems are often misunderstood and vaguely defined. Many of the approaches to passive solar heating and cooling are at rudimentary stages, with little performance data and evaluation, few modeling techniques, and minimal published information. Yet for the building designer and the occupant, these concepts have major implications in the design and use of buildings. The purpose of this publication is to offer a working definition and a basic understanding of a number of existing applications of passive solar designs. Methods of passive solar design are not presented in this publication; nor are rules of thumb or passive solar assemblies and components. These subjects will be addressed in later publications. A reference bibliography has been included to assist the reader who desires more information and to stimulate additional individual research and testing. Passive design techniques can be integrated in an additive fashion in more typical buildings but this challenge for now, is left to the reader.
