Solar Spacecraft

Increasing the momentum using solar sails?
Hey, if u have a spacecraft with a solar sail of 1000m^2, and u want to double the acceleration of the craft without increasing the size of the sail...how do you do this?
My guess is to make it reflective...but i don't understand how that would double the acceleration, can someone please explain why?
So basically the acceleration is much greater when the photons are reflected than when it is absorbed by the black?
When you throw a ball at a wall, it comes back to you, right? It's because the wall exerted a force on the ball, it changed the momentum.
[Rate of change is momentum!]
Now, by Newton's third law of motion, it is evident that the ball also exerted some force on the wall. Well, if the wall causes a more sharp change in momentum, it'll experience more force from the ball.
Use the same analogy and yes - it's not a far fetched analogy. Both of the situations will require almost the same questions to analyze!

Ring shadows on Saturn, Cassini image Photo Mugs Ring shadows on Saturn, Cassini image. Saturns rings are seen nearly edge-on across lower frame. Due to the high inclination of Saturn to the Sun at this time, the shadows of the rings are widely spread across its clouds at upper left. The varying densities of the rings are responsible for the varying darkness of the shadows. This image was taken on 4th May 2005, when Cassini was around 999, 000 k... |

Orion (Spacecraft) $89.22 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Orion is a spacecraft design currently under development by the United States space agency NASA. Each Orion spacecraft will carry a crew of four to six astronauts. The spacecraft is designed to be launched by the Ares I, a launch vehicle, also currently under development. Both Orion and Ares I are elements of NASAs Project Constellation, which plans to send human explorers back to the Moon by 2020, and then onward to Mars and other destinations in the Solar System. On August 31, 2006, NASA awarded Lockheed Martin (LM) the contract to design, develop, and build Orion. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Lander (Spacecraft) $125.85 A lander is a spacecraft which descends toward and comes to rest on the surface of an astronomical body. For bodies with atmospheres, the landing is called atmospheric reentry and the lander descends as a reentry vehicle. In these cases landers may employ aerobraking and parachutes to slow down, often with small landing rockets which fire just before impact to bring the lander to rest relatively gently. The Mars Pathfinder mission also used inflatable airbags to cushion the landers impact. When a high velocity impact is planned, the spacecraft is called an impactor. Several terrestrial bodies have been subject of lander and/or impact exploration: among them the planets Mars and Venus and the Saturn moon Titan. Of the inner Solar System planets, Mercury is the only one yet to be visited by a lander. Kepler (Spacecraft) by Yoan, Niek [Paperback] $87.62 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Kepler Mission is a NASA program supported by a space observatorythe Kepler spacecraftdesigned to discover Earthlike planets orbiting other stars. The spacecraft is named in honor of German astronomer Johannes Kepler. The spacecraft was launched on March 7, 2009, with a planned mission lifetime of at least 3.5 years. Kepler uses a photometer developed by NASA to continuously monitor the brightness of over 145,000 main sequence stars in a fixed field of view. The data collected from these observations will be analyzed to detect periodic fluctuations that indicate the presence of extrasolar planets (planets outside our solar system) that are in the process of crossing the face of other stars. Huygens (Spacecraft) by Avery, Iustinus Tim [Paperback] $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Huygens probe was an atmospheric entry probe carried to Saturns moon Titan as part of the CassiniHuygens mission. The probe was supplied by the European Space Agency and named after the Dutch 17th century astronomer Christiaan Huygens. The combined CassiniHuygens spacecraft was launched from Earth on October 15, 1997. Huygens separated from the Cassini orbiter on December 25, 2004, and landed on Titan on January 14, 2005 near the Xanadu region. This was the first landing ever accomplished in the outer solar system. It touched down on land, although the possibility that it would touch down in an ocean was also taken into account in its design. Even though it was never officially designated a lander, the probe continued to send data for about 90 minutes after reaching the surface.
