The Solar Project $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In 1995 Solar One was converted into Solar Two, by adding a second ring of 108 larger 95 m (1,000 ft ) heliostats around the existing Solar One, totaling 1926 heliostats with a total area of 82,750 m (891,000 ft ). This gave Solar Two the ability to produce 10 megawatts. Solar Two used molten salt, a combination of 60 sodium nitrate and 40 potassium nitrate, as an energy storage medium instead of oil or water as with Solar One. This helped in energy storage during brief interruptions in sunlight due to clouds. The molten salt also allowed the energy to be stored in large tanks for future use such as night time.Solar Two proved it could run continuously around the clock producing power. Solar Two was decommissioned in 1999, and was converted by the University of California, Davis, into an Air Cherenkov Telescope in 2001, measuring gamma rays hitting the atmosphere. Its name is now C.A.C.T.U.S.. Solar Twos 3 primary participants were Southern California Edison (SCE), the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Solar Power in Spain $90.81 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Spain is one of the most attractive countries for the development of solar energy, as it has more available sunshine than any other European country. The Spanish government is committed to achieving a target of 12 percent of primary energy from renewable energy by 2010 with an installed solar generating capacity of 3000 megawatts. Spain is the fourth largest manufacturer in the world of solar power technology and exports 80 percent of this output to Germany. Spain added a record 2 GW of solar power in 2008. Total Solar power in Spain was 3 GW by end of 2009. Solar energy has covered 2.8 of the electricity demand in 2009. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Pocking Solar Park $78.07 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Pocking Solar Park is a 10 megawatt (MWp) solar power plant. Construction and assembly of the power plant started in August 2005 and was completed in March 2006. On the former military training area in the LowerBavarian town of Pocking, sheep are now grazing under and around the 57,912 photovoltaic modules. Solar power is the generation of electricity from sunlight. This can be direct as with photovoltaics (PV), or indirect as with concentrating solar power (CSP), where the suns energy is focused to boil water which is then used to provide power. Solar power has the potential to provide over 1,000 times total world energy consumption in 2008, though it provided only 0.02 of the total that year. Rote Jahne Solar Park $54.86 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Rote Jahne Solar Park in Saxony, Germany, has a total output capacity of 6 megawatts peak (MWp). Built at a former military airfield, it has 90,000 First Solar thinfilm modules covering approximately 6.7 hectares, and produces approximately 5.7 million kilowatthours (kW.h) of solar electricity every year. The project cost around Euro 21 million or US 28 million. Solar photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity and many solar photovoltaic power stations have been built, mainly in Europe. As of October 2009, the largest photovoltaic (PV) power plants in the world are the Olmedilla Photovoltaic Park (Spain, 60 MW), the Strasskirchen Solar Park (Germany, 54 MW), the Lieberose Photovoltaic Park (Germany, 53 MW), the Puertollano Photovoltaic Park (Spain, 50 MW), the Moura Photovoltaic Power Station (Portugal, 46 MW), and the Waldpolenz Solar Park (Germany, 40 MW). Some photovoltaic power stations which are presently proposed will have a capacity of 150 MW or more. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Solar Power in Germany $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Germany is the worlds top photovoltaics (PV) installer, accounting for almost half of the global solar power market in 2007. The country has a feedin tariff for renewable electricity, which requires utilities to pay customers a guaranteed rate for any solar power they feed into the grid. Germans installed about 1,300 megawatts of new PV capacity in 2007, up from 850 megawatts in 2006, for a cumulative total exceeding 3,830 megawatts. Germany added a further 2 GW in 2008 and 2.5 GW in 2009 taking the total to 8.3 GW by end of 2009. As capacity has risen, installed PV system costs have been cut in half between 1997 and 2007. Solar power now meets about 1 percent of Germanys electricity demand, a share that some market analysts expect could reach 25 percent by 2050. Solar Water Heating in Dragash Municipality, Kosovo $106.74 Water has been heated with the sun almost as long as there have been humans, but it is not until recently that more advanced and effective solar water heating systems have become common, and they are still gaining ground. Through the years new systems and new solar collectors have been developed. In Kosovo, however, not much attention has been paid to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and solar water heating systems is a new concept. However, a solar water heating system has been installed at the hospital in Dragash Municipality in southern Kosovo. The system is a pilot project, to see how well solar energy can be used in this area. This thesis examines the existing solar water heating system at the hospital in Dragash. The possibilities of using the fundamental principle of the solar water heating system at the hospital on residential houses in Dragash is looked into. The total annual incoming solar radiation for one square meter is calculated. The environmental, social and economic effects of solar water heating in Dragash is considered and discussed. Economic calculations are made on the effects of installation of solar water heating systems. Author: Dahl H. Solar Power in the United Kingdom $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Until July 2008, solar power in the United Kingdom (photovoltaic electricity generation) was relatively commercially unattractive due to the moderate level of insolation, cheap grid electricity (compared to other European countries), and low financial incentives from government. In particular, net metering was not readily available, due to disagreement on what to do with the VAT. In 2006, the United Kingdom had installed 12.5 MWp of photovoltaic capacity represented just 0.3 of the European total of 3.4GWp. By way of comparison, due to their plans to phase out nuclear power there is a growing capacity in Germany (due to a Feedin Tariff program), where 3.0 GWp had been installed by the end of 2006 (90 of all European capacity). In contrast, solar thermal capacity to supply hot water was expected to grow to 25 MWth in 2006. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
