tips for a small pond? native aussie fish, oxygenator etc?

just built a small 1.2 by 1.2 m pond. yeah easter too much time ....it is 40 cm deep, lined with pond liner and already has a nice umbrella grass. my question is, to control mozzies what is a native fish suitable for a small pond?is the pond big enough for fish? do i need one of those solar oxygenator or just underwater plants? is that enough for the fish?how many fish should i buy? your help would be much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

At home my parents have a large freshwater pond, probably 2m square. It works by itself except for a waterfall they created (pump driven) for aeration for an hour once or twice a day. They have several plants like water lillies and a few other natives. The best fish for keeping down the mozzies are normal ole guppies from your local river! They breed like hell and eat anything the moves. I recommend not buying fish to start with, just get some plants from your local stream/pond (if thats legal where you are), and you can pick up a handful opf guppies while you're there. Don't overdo it, the pond will need time to have the plants settle in to cope with the fishes waste.

A warning or two: find a picture of duck weed, and memorise it, and DONT bring it home!!! It grows very quickly and suffocates the pond. Secondly, the lillies you choose should suit the size of your pond, and you will need to clear them every now and again. You can tell when because the lilly pads will start growing above the water. But they do provide excellent hiding spots your fish.

Hiding spots are essential in an australian outdoor pond....the kingfishers love it when the fish are in a barrel- easy to catch. When you have a lot of coverage for fish, you cna start getting the brighter fish, like swordtails or goldfish for that gllint in the sun. However that glint also tends to get them caught and eaten.

By the way, make sure you leave the water for 24 hours before adding any living things. Mozzies cant go through the whole breeding cycle that quick so dont worry.
