Best alternate energy?

what is the next best thing to crude oil? Everything has its caveats:
Wind energy requires lots of maintanence, lots of windmills, and all the surrounding trees in the area need to be cut down for them to get all the wind.
Nuclear energy-well, take a walk down Chernobyl(sp?). Its a high terrorist target and requires constant surveilance. Also, it produces a lot of waste.
Hydro-electric energy-easy to use, but destroys the other side of the dam, constant surveilance, easy terrorist target, and many places cant use it (anywhere from florida, Las Vegas, mountain areas, etc.)
Solar- not very strong, cant work at night, requires a lot of trees to be cut for more sunlight, break easy, and to power the us would require a panel the size of Texas. Not to mention very expensive to mantain.
Food sources- takes away crops and requires more water and space, plus has better uses, such as feeding over half of the population that is impoverished or hungry.

There is a readily accessible source of energy for homes, business, and vehicles, it comes from the methane gas which is omitted from the "stink" at landfills. We have no shortage of trash and this is mostly 'burned off' rather than used. Waste Management uses it in some of their landfills and a couple actually source towns for gas....It is cheap and no one can regulate its cost to consumers .... so it will remain un tapped.
