Film Tinting

Film Tinting

$95.59

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Film tinting is the process of adding color to black and white film, usually by means of soaking the film in dye and staining the film emulsion. The effect is that all of the light shining through is filtered, so that what would be white light is, in fact, another color. Film toning is the process of replacing the silver particles in the emulsion with colored, silver salts, by means of chemicals. The process began in the 1890s, originally as a copyguard against film pirates. The film was tinted amber, the color of the safelight on film printers. The discovery of bleaching methods by pirates soon put an end to this. Both the Edison Studios and the Biograph Company began tinting their films for setting moods. Because orthochromatic film stock could not be used in lowlight situations, blue became the most popular tint, applied to scenes shot during the day and when projected, signified night. Solar Power in the United Kingdom

Solar Power in the United Kingdom

$76.47

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Until July 2008, solar power in the United Kingdom (photovoltaic electricity generation) was relatively commercially unattractive due to the moderate level of insolation, cheap grid electricity (compared to other European countries), and low financial incentives from government. In particular, net metering was not readily available, due to disagreement on what to do with the VAT. In 2006, the United Kingdom had installed 12.5 MWp of photovoltaic capacity represented just 0.3 of the European total of 3.4GWp. By way of comparison, due to their plans to phase out nuclear power there is a growing capacity in Germany (due to a Feedin Tariff program), where 3.0 GWp had been installed by the end of 2006 (90 of all European capacity). In contrast, solar thermal capacity to supply hot water was expected to grow to 25 MWth in 2006. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. A Survey of Passive Solar Buildings

A Survey of Passive Solar Buildings

$35.09

This publication of passive solar projects built in the United States has been prepared to document the state of the art in passive solar design. Passive solar heating and cooling can provide a major percentage of the buildings energy requirement, while at the same time representing a heightened level of involvement for the architect in the design stages of the building. The full potential of this passive conditioning depends on a sensitive awareness of the relationship between climate, comfort, and the thermal characteristics of buildings and building materials. Passive solar systems are often misunderstood and vaguely defined. Many of the approaches to passive solar heating and cooling are at rudimentary stages, with little performance data and evaluation, few modeling techniques, and minimal published information. Yet for the building designer and the occupant, these concepts have major implications in the design and use of buildings. The purpose of this publication is to offer a working definition and a basic understanding of a number of existing applications of passive solar designs. Methods of passive solar design are not presented in this publication; nor are rules of thumb or passive solar assemblies and components. These subjects will be addressed in later publications. A reference bibliography has been included to assist the reader who desires more information and to stimulate additional individual research and testing. Passive design techniques can be integrated in an additive fashion in more typical buildings but this challenge for now, is left to the reader. Survey of European Passive Solar Buildings

Survey of European Passive Solar Buildings

$58.7

The idea for this report originated within the Solar Energy Pilot Study of the NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). The following countries were formal members of that pilot study: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States. (Additional countries participated as observers.) A Passive Solar Applications Group was formed as one of the subprojects of the pilot study. As part of the Groups collaborative activities, France offered to undertake a survey of European passive solar buildings. The results of the survey are contained in this document which covers buildings in Andorra, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. An inquiry designed to identify newly constructed buildings required close cooperation between the authors, COMES, and both official organizations and concerned individuals in other European countries. The owners, builders, organizations, developers, architects, and researchers were asked to complete a questionnaire (reprinted in the appendix) and to supply additional documents, drawings, and cost figures that were used to establish data for each building. The current state of our environment calls for an energy revolution. To combat the threats of global warming and growing pollution due to fossil fuels, the United States must shift away from depleting non renewable energy sources towards a more stable alternative. The most viable alternative at this time is solar energy. This paper observes the steps needed for a speedy transition towards this clean and renewable energy source. The first section of this thesis outlines the possible governmental and social incentives needed to power this revolution. While the second portion addresses the growing efficiency of solar hot water heating technologies. Through collaboration with the ecoMOD project at the University of Virginia, which elicits the design, build, and evaluation of sustainable affordable housing in the Charlottesville area, this thesis analyzes the inresidential efficiencies of two competing solar waterheating designs the flatplate and evacuated tube array. Their efficiencies have been tested through laboratory research under ideal conditions, however this study analyzes the two as they function under reallife conditions.
