2012 solar flare could wipe out power, satellites, etc?

I read that solar acitvity is going to peak in 2011-2013 or so, particularly in 2012 and that there are holes in our magnetosphere. So when the flare hits, there could be a loss of power in places all over the world that could take years to repair. Not to mention the fact that cell phones, internet and GPS will be gone too. Should I be worried? What parts of the USA will be affected? Is the world doing anything to prepare? Just facts please.

No, you are misinformed. We are expecting a less-than-average peak in solar activity in May 2013, but this is a statistical prediction. It's impossible to predict individual solar flares with any accuracy and, besides, solar flares in themselves don't cause problems. _Sometimes_ solar flares trigger coronal mass ejections, which _sometimes_ effect the power grid and satellites, but these have never been "wiped out" in the past, so are unlikely to have problems in future. The power companies have taken steps to prevent a repeat of the Hydro Quebec problem, and satellites now have sufficient redundancy to be safe from solar activity. I wouldn't worry much about this.
