What does the inside of a wind turbine tower contain?

Doing research and so far I see merely transport to the nacelle and wires running from the nacelle to the generator. Are the generators inside the tower or is there any actual production of electricity occurring inside the tower power, or does the tower simply encase the wires? Basically does the tower serve any purpose aside from support and access?

No, why should it? Ladder to get up, cables to get the power down.
It has to be strong enough to take the wind forces on the head in all directions and support the bearing for the head at the top. Ideally not be too big so it doesn't distort the wind.
