Why are solar panels on the roofs of houses?

Why are they put there? How can they not be placed on the floor or the window. My fiance and I are interested in putting solar panels on our new home. I was really curious and google only gave me not the answer. My roof is relatively small in our new house and I do not think it would be good there. Why it is usually placed there and there another location? You'll be voted best answer if you answer all my questions. Thank you in advance, and I would appreciate if someone is rude. The solar panels are installed on the roof, because many times the roof is well exposed to the sun providing the roof is not blocked by trees or something else so that enough sunlight would not be absorbed.
